The Tetons are experiencing a wonderful summer. In celebration of this time of year, this newsletter is about all things SUMMER. We hope you all are enjoying the warm weather and packing in many activities!

INSPIRATION - Outdoor Living Spaces

There is a saying here that people come to the Tetons to ski in the winter but stay for the summer. Summer in the mountains is hard to beat – it’s not too hot, too humid, or too buggy. The days are long and we can enjoy the outdoors long into the evening. When we design homes for our clients, outdoor living spaces are always on our mind. Will an outdoor seating or dining area be open air, covered, screened or both? Do we want to incorporate a fireplace or a fire pit? How will the outdoor space be accessed? Do we design for spaces that maximize the views or is it more important to have privacy?  Designing ways to connect ourselves to the outdoors expands our living space and enriches the quality of our lives. Below, we’ve selected images from several projects to illustrate ideas you may want to incorporate when planning for or renovating your own home. Click on the links in green to learn more about a project.

At DMA we design structure, interiors and site to make a complete composition. This outdoor area includes covered and open spaces, an outdoor kitchen and dining area, hot tub and a fire pit conversation area. An existing natural spring fed creek was also integrated into the site design with MD Landscaping in Driggs, Idaho providing the landscaping.

Located in Teton Village, this covered outdoor kitchen and dining area has heaters as well as a gathering area around a fireplace so these outdoor spaces can be enjoyed year-round in this ski-in/ski-out property.

A rustic enclosed porch has windows that can be removed to make it a screened in porch allowing cooling breezes to flow yet have protection from mosquitoes. It provides the ambiance of a campfire with the comforts of home a few steps inside. Below, is a much more refined porch with an entire wall of windows providing a panorama of mountain views.

A room with a view - this spa silo sheathed in reclaimed barn siding overlooks the Uinta mountains near Oakley, Utah, providing an ever changing vista as the seasons change.

IN PROGRESS - Residence on the Rivers

This project is located near Ashton, Idaho at the confluence of the Henry’s Fork and Warm River. Principal Chris Moulder and Architects-In-Training Evan Wendte and Atia Rahman recently made a site visit. It is great for our staff to see the projects they are working on from start to finish. The civil engineering for this site is impressive and it is a huge task just to cut in the road to the property as there are boulders the size of refrigerators that will be repurposed for a retaining wall. Construction on the residence is just starting. Below is a rendered 3D model of the completed two-floor home that will have an expansive covered deck with a bridge to an observation point and a walk-out lower level with a large covered stone patio to take advantage of the stellar views.

ON THE BOARDS - Glass Teepee

It is always fun to be especially creative and design “outside the box”. One of our former clients wanted to see what we could come up with when the task was the design for a guest house that would be a glass teepee. Starting with the basic teepee form for the public areas of the house, Principal Chris Moulder sheathed it in glass and created a box-like structure for the private areas of the house - the bedroom and bathroom. Observation decks and a stone patio with a fire pit provide areas to gather and view the stunning landscape or enjoy star gazing. It is rewarding to create a structure that imbues a cozy ambiance such as this. Connecting people with place is our goal with every project.

OFFICE STAFF - Welcome Claudia Ramos!

We’re very happy to have recently welcomed Claudia Ramos to our DMA team. Born in Peru, Claudia earned her Bachelor of Architecture and Urbanism from Ricardo Palma University in Lima. After graduating in 2019, she began her architectural career, working on residential and commercial projects as well as in interior design. During the pandemic she was able to move to Jackson. Claudia’s skills in Autocad, ArchiCAD, Sketchup, and V-ray, as well as Adobe Suite, have prepared her well to be part of DMA’s team. She is a wonderful addition to our staff!
