Hello, everyone! The calendar says it is still winter, but what an unusual season it has been. As we alternate between winter and spring days, we wanted to take a moment to update you on the latest happenings at DMA. Whether you’re settled in by the fire or enjoying a winter walk, we hope you take a few moments to cozy up and catch up with all the exciting news we have to share. Enjoy!

TO INSPIRE

Over the past couple of years, much of our work has focused on remodeling projects, and we would like to showcase two very different examples. Remodeling and expanding homes can be challenging, as we often encounter unexpected issues behind walls and discover outdated construction practices that do not comply with current building codes. However, these projects can also be incredibly rewarding. It’s exciting to transform a modest existing house to meet the owner's new needs. Below, we highlight two projects: one that has recently been completed and another that is currently under construction.

The first project is a log home located north of Jackson. When our clients purchased it, it was the smallest and oldest log home in the subdivision, built in 1993. As a retired commercial architect, the owner envisioned how the home could be reconfigured to better accommodate their lifestyle. Together with architect Kurt Dubbe, they designed a 2,400-square-foot addition on the left side of the house. This addition includes a new entryway, kitchen, pantry, dining area and living room with windows overlooking the Tetons, and a new master suite. A new two-car garage with a workshop was added to the south of the primary suite, providing access to the kitchen and pantry. 

The new motor court provides a circular drive for the entry and the new garage while the original garage remains on the east end of the home.

The addition created the primary living areas for the owners, addressing the issues related to the existing home's size and layout, which were more appropriate for a "summer cabin" than for a modern luxury home designed for entertaining and year-round living. This addition offers breathtaking, panoramic views of the Grand Tetons, which were previously blocked by small windows in the original house.

The owners consider the kitchen to be the heart of their home. Their new kitchen is bright and open, seamlessly connecting with the great room. This layout not only offers wonderful views but also makes it easy to host large gatherings of friends, both inside and out.

The original home has been transformed into guest quarters, now featuring a family room, a guest laundry area, a wet bar, three ensuite bedrooms, and an office. Renovations included recladding the existing wood ceilings, replacing the floors, and upgrading the windows and doors. The bathrooms were completely remodeled, and some interior walls were reconfigured for better flow. Throughout this process, the original logs were preserved as much as possible to maintain the charm and character of the original structure.

On the exterior, the challenge was to successfully integrate the existing log cabin with a new building without mimicking the original design or creating an appearance of an add-on. The solution involved creating custom-milled siding from 2x12 cedar that complemented the horizontal lines of the existing logs without directly imitating them. Lighter-colored, 4-inch wood siding was applied to the soffits and used vertically at the entryway and the north porch as accents, highlighting the entry and the north-south axis of the addition.

We are excited to watch the progress on an addition for another client, which involves a completely different design program. Chris Moulder and Ethan Moulder designed this 1,000-square-foot addition with two bedrooms and two bathrooms as an integrated accessory residential unit (ARU) that will serve as an apartment for the owner’s adult daughter. Given the high housing costs in the valley, we are working on several homes that will provide private living spaces for two generations.

The addition will feature a master bedroom with a walk-in closet and an ensuite bathroom equipped with double vanities. There will also be a second full bathroom and a guest room. To enhance natural light in the bathrooms, which lack windows, sun tubes will be installed. At the front of the addition, there will be an open living and dining area along with a kitchenette (which will not include an oven) and a covered deck.

The apartment will be accessible from the main house or via a new exterior staircase. It will also include a stackable washer and dryer. On the main floor, the garage will be extended to create space for a new workout room, mudroom, and laundry area.

This remodel and addition will not only provide separate living quarters but also modernize the home to reflect current aesthetics, significantly increasing its value. Stay tuned for updates on the project's progress and completion.

TO CELEBRATE

On February 11th, amidst the snowfall, a Topping Out Ceremony was held at the new Transportation Facility of the Teton County School District. School board members, along with the construction team from Ormond Builders and the design team from Dubbe Moulder, had the opportunity to sign the final structural beam before it was lifted into place.

The new building, which spans 17,600 square feet, will replace the existing bus barn constructed in 1975. It will feature nine bays dedicated to bus maintenance, along with office space, employee locker rooms, and break rooms. Additionally, the design provides essential storage areas for items such as tires, windshields, parts, lubricants, batteries, and more. It is incredibly fulfilling to be part of a project that creates a pleasant and safe work environment for the district’s maintenance employees. This facility will improve the efficiency and safety of the district’s bus system as it continues to expand.
