It’s been an interesting winter in Jackson Hole so far with delayed snowfall. We’ve had very cold temperatures followed by a January thaw and much melting. Here at the office, we are keeping up our busy pace and we wanted to share some of our happenings with you.

TO CELEBRATE - Teton Youth & Family Services Van Vleck House

It was a wonderful culmination to celebrate the ribbon cutting of the new Van Vleck House and Hirschfield Center for Teton Youth & Family Services last fall. The Van Vleck House is a group home for at-risk children that was originally built in 1967 and last remodeled in the 1980’s. Keeping the existing footprint, Dubbe Moulder Architects completely redesigned the two story structure creating a cozy, friendly communal core of living, dining and kitchen spaces along with seven double bedrooms, one single bedroom, office space, family waiting/interview room, laundry and storage. The design emphasis was creating new spaces that provide greater safety for both the children and staff.

The outdoor space between the two buildings was reorganized into a private recreational courtyard where the young residents can play and interact safely. DMA was so pleased to be a part of this project and enjoyed collaborating with Teton Youth & Family Services and New West Building Company to create a place where the children and families that are serviced, along with the dedicated staff, have better functioning and safer facilities.

Chris Moulder, Claudia Ramos, Atia Rahman, Evan Wendte and Mackenzie King enjoyed the open house. It is always fun to see the culmination of a project, especially one such as this, which is a benefit to our community.

INSPIRATION - Not a Boring Hallway

There is a lot of thought and problem solving that goes into creating a floor plan. Part of that architectural effort is in creating the distinction between public and private spaces. In an office there may be a reception area, a public teller line, or a doctor’s waiting room. People are invited to the more private areas - an individual’s office or exam room. In homes, architects consciously plan to have transition areas to separate public and private areas. Most times, hallways are these connecting spaces but they can often be cramped and dark. At Dubbe Moulder Architects we carefully consider the transition spaces that provide privacy but tie spaces together. Below, we’ve selected images from several projects to illustrate ideas of making hallways anything but boring. Click on the links in bold to learn more about a project.

This professional office designed by principal, Chris Moulder, features rounded offices and a curved wall leading to an eclipse of glass offices. The space creates curiosity and a desire to follow the ‘Yellow Brick road’.

When is a hallway not a hallway? When it becomes a room in itself.

This hallway connects the children’s wing and play area with two guest rooms added above a garage. While typical hallways are dark, narrow and have unusable space, this hallway was designed with bookshelves, vaulted ceilings and additional windows creating a bright, spacious atmosphere.  

This bridge, in a residence designed by Principal, Kurt Dubbe, connects the public parts of the home with the master suite. In the beauty of Jackson Hole, especially, we try to create transitional spaces that strenghten our relationship with nature. This bridge hallway crosses a running stream on the property and has views to the Grand Tetons.

A hallway with a view - We strive to make passageways that make nature part of our everyday lives. It makes homes more pleasant and relaxing to be in and thus more liveable.
