PRIVATE RESIDENCE : Teton County, Wyoming

Situated within the Snake River corridor, the site contains a main house of 7,000-square feet including a 3-car garage, and a 1,000-square foot guest house/garage. The design direction for the house is a careful adaptation of the Shingle style, with references to the great mountain lodges of the Northwest and a touch of contemporary whimsy. Because of its proximity to the river, the relationship of the site and the river was a primary design consideration from the beginning.

The long and unique site informed the plan of the residence, as connecting passageways unite the major spaces and flirt with becoming spaces in their own right. The relationship with the river suggested water as a design element. Functional, circulating fish ponds were incorporated from the beginning of the process, turning connecting hallways into enclosed bridges over running water. Big, healthy cutthroat trout navigate the ponds. It’s possible, with the correct fly and a tightly looped cast, to hook and release one of these beauties from the north terrace; not a bad way to relax at home.
