COW PASTURE RECREATION FACILITY REDESIGN: Jackson Hole, Wyoming

The current siting of the Cow Pasture softball fields is such that occasional home runs land on private property, hitting houses, horses and outdoor living spaces. Compounding the situation, a skateboard park has been constructed in an area between the centerfield of the two adjoining softball fields.

By re-orienting both fields 180-degrees, all batters aim away from private property and from the skate park. While some additional netting may be required to protect vehicles parked at the perimeter of the ball fields, the danger of property damage or personal injury is significantly lessened. Foul balls, a more frequent occurrence in fast-pitch rather than slow-pitch ball, must still be accounted for, but are minor due to angle, speed and length of the foul ball. Repositioning the fields allows an opportunity for shared open space that could be further enhanced as pedestrian friendly areas for spectators and skaters. A future concession area would also provide for revenue creation from tournaments, competitions and other special events.
