PRIVATE RESIDENCE REMODEL: Jackson Hole, Wyoming

This hideaway in the mountains needed an extensive remodel with its small bedrooms and poorly placed, diminutive windows that didn't afford views to the pastoral beauty of the site and the mountains beyond. The existing living room, clearly too small to house the owner’s extensive art collections, was enlarged and expanded. The north wall was extended twelve vertical feet, increasing the volumes of the living room and master bedroom, maximizing the views that included the Teton mountain range, and providing generous display surfaces. The focal point of the living space, a massive quartzite fireplace, was set perpendicular to the north-facing windows, providing the perfect setting for viewing the mountains in relaxed comfort.

Borrowing space from an existing TV nook, a formal dining room on an axis with the fireplace was created, the ceiling of which was lowered to provide a more intimate setting for dining. The dining room is close to the kitchen, but the traffic pattern does not require traversing it to get to other areas of the house. An unused bay of the existing garage was also borrowed, and converted into a new pantry, laundry room and mud room.
